Alright, so, I’ve been thinking for a couple days about what Philip Rosedale’s upcoming SLCC keynote means. Why so much thought? Because he’s apparently not giving it in person, but is ‘phoning it in’.
It looks like an obvious snub, but truth be told, Rosedale’s actually got a holiday planned with the wife and kids, and the scheduling for travel just hasn’t worked out the way he’d hoped. That’s cool. Life happens, and it’s nice that he’s remembering to smell the roses some.
However, given that the point of SLCC is being there… well, why not get someone else to give a keynote at SLCC? There’s supposed to be other Labbies in attendance, and while Rosedale’s handsome and earnest charm is certainly an intoxicating brew, it might be nice to hear from someone who has another angle on things for a change.
If I were attending, I’d prefer to hear something from Ihavenotbeenfiredyet Linden, in the flesh, than from Rosedale phoning one in. Rosedale on the wire? That’s common enough. A Linden giving a speech in person? That’s still rare enough to be special.

Commenters are to be civil, courteous and respectful to others, insofar as it is possible to do so. Beyond that, you're not required to agree with the opinions expressed by me or by others.
Think for yourselves! First time commenters will wind-up in the moderation queue and your comment won't appear right away. Ditto for anything that gets flagged by the anti-spam rules.
If I pay any attention at all to SLCC, it will be to the speech to be given by Pathfinder ExLinden.
Dusan and Pathfinder are the two most interesting speakers on the list for me.

/me agrees with Tateru……and, smelling the roses or not, there are other smells emanating that should/could be addressed.
Or couldn’t he be, like, *virtually* there? Big screen, SL running, logged in from wherever he happens to be?
Just sayin’…
Last year Ray Kurzweil’s avatar gave the keynote.
It was terrible. An SL avatar lecturing us about the future-historical imperative to lengthen our lives by injecting nanobots into our bloodstream… enjoy your breakfast!
According to the SLCC website:
“Rosedale’s speech will be delivered in world and simultaneously webcast to attendees of the Second Life Community Convention in Boston on Saturday morning.”
Doesn’t that mean that he’s planning on being at the SLCC islands inworld giving his speech and it will be webcast to the attendees in Boston?
You’d think that after the reception Canned Obama got from the Boy Scouts that “phoning it in” wouldn’t be an option.
I’d really like to be there at SLCC in person, as I have at the others. AS Tateru said, I’m leaving that morning just after speaking for Yosemite with my family. It’s a trip that has been planned for 6 months and I can’t join late. If the SLCC organizers want in the future to check with me first and make sure I can be there, I’m very open to that. It’s an important event.
You mean he isn’t even going to be there?
Jeepers!
What if the phone lines are down and his call doesn’t go through?
It was Otto from A Fish Called Wanda who said it best:
Disapointed!!!

@Philip I think the family vacation was a perfectly valid excuse. Only the most churlish would, I think, have expected you to take time out from it to attend SLCC in-person.
