Shameless promotion I wrote a piece for The Metaverse Journal about this topic. Since it is mine, I cannot but recommend it really, now can I?

As usual, it’s not from the same angle that you might read just anywhere.

    Interesting article.
The most common feedback we got at the Caledon Oxbridge Gateway was “I wish this had existed when I first came to SL”.
Oxbridge will, of course, continue its mission of teaching and orientation for newcomers to the grid.
Perhaps one day they can merge a quick entry into a more complete orientation.
    Thanks for the great information!

This is very sad, but not unexpected. With the exception of the Caledon Oxbridge Gateway, most community gateways were rather poor, many looking as if noobs themselves had built them. However, the heart was there. Most of these folks believe in Second Life and devoted time and resources they could have spent elsewhere in SL or in other virtual worlds.

@Fogwoman Gray: Thanks for letting us know about that Caledon will remain. I’ll keep sending noobs there.

  3. The Caledon Oxbridge CGW is great. Carl, Fogwoman, et al, do a great job there. Highly recommended.

  4. So, Tateru, before I say something typically ignorant on LL’s blog, let me see if I understand this. In past years I had students sign up through NMC’s gateway. I’d be there to help them as newborns.

Can I now have them begin at my campus island? If so, that’s cool. If not, will the clueless newcomers have to pick one of several destinations, based on interest?

I sure hope you say “the former, not the latter.”
