The Second Life viewer directory revolves around self-certification. Nobody really seems all that interested in finding out whether you’re telling the truth about your compliance with Linden Lab’s third-party viewer policies or whether you’ve maybe gotten some of it wrong unintentionally.

So, a double-barrelled poll for your opinions. Who do you think is playing it straight, and who do you think is getting it wrong? There’s ten viewers on the directory, pick from 0 to 10 of them in each poll, depending on which ones you think are honest and correct… or not.

Polls close midnight, 24 September, US Pacific time.

  1. My apologies, there are actually three more viewers on the directory (on page 2), that I didn’t spot. The polls only have room for ten choices each anyway. If there’s enough interest, I can set up another pair of polls for the final three.

Tee hee :) I had that same trouble with a certain someone when arguing viewers :)

  3. chris pestell says:

.. and excuse me but wheres the “none of these” option?

  4. Since they’re multiple choice polls, if you don’t think any apply, just skip over that poll.

  5. Very much think the answer is “none of the above”, Nitpick Linden could have them all banned if he so chose.

This is of course not the same as asking which of these viewers do you trust which is how the question will be answered as the vast majority of your readership wouldn’t be able to list a single TPV policy rule off the top of their head.

The fact that Ascent is on the list leads me to believe that Woodbury still has a bit of push in the lab. =^-^=

  7. I have great faith in my readers. For the most part they’re intelligent people who take the time to read improbably long and involuted verbiage, think about it carefully and form their own opinions, or so I believe.

I’m not sure the question “should” be which you trust. -That, you can see by counting clients inworld. The difference between believing in TPV compliance and trust is rather interesting. I’ll wait with further comments until the poll is closed, so as not to skew anything.

  9. I really think at least Kirstens Viewer Should be on the pool. Anyway, it would be really interesting to see some evaluation on the viewers. I have always asked myself: how can we know?

Maybe it is not a subject to develop here, but it would be interesting to see a post somewhere on each viewer.

  10. Ari Blackthorne says:

Is this poll in Flash? Sheesh. Guess I’ll sit this and all future polls out. :(

  11. Oops, forgot to check the “notify me on followup” box. Doing it now. Sorry.

  12. It doesn’t matter what my opinion is… I can’t track down whether these viewers actually belong on the list according to LL’s rules. I just know I can build Imprudence from source without much hassle at all, and the devs seem like reasonable people. Since they liked my idea. :-)

Actually, an audit of the viewers would make an interesting read. Hop on it, Tateru.

  13. What some viewers have forgotten is a privacy policy. I know Radegast is a trusted lil client, because I’ve been elbow deep in its code. But they are not in compliance with the TPV policies until they have one of those in a prominent place.

As for Stored Inventory… who knows? This one is a pure matter of trust and reputation, because you sure can’t check to see if it isn’t up to any shenanigans.

  14. Ann Otoole InSL says:

Viewers and bot controllers or chat apps w/o 3D are two different things. Probably could have taken the non 3D clients off the poll.

Kirstens is straight up and has no funny business. Since it is so obvious Kirstens is straight up and fully compliant then I guess it doesn’t need to even be on the poll.

Kirstens latest test build: 60 FPS at 700 ktris/fr and 20 fps at 1400 ktris/fr on a GT240. Which looks like movie studio quality 29.97 fps with a million polygons in view. Not bad at all.

  15. By request, I’ve added in two stub polls to cover the missing viewers.

  16. chris pestell says:

Sorry, after mulling this over I still think there should be a “none of the above” for which viewer I “believe….” (odd concept) as I do not “believe” that me skipping a poll counts as a vote – because it cant even though its a valid position.

And I “believe” that blanket selecting all those listed in the other poll (“do not believe”) will just be treated as a crank vote or noise. Well, thats what I “believe” lol
