Areas of Second Life that are frequented by new users are having issues with scammers who are using the Linden Bears, that are currently being sold by Linden Lab to raise funds, for themselves, instead of for Japanese disaster relief.

Peddlers are offering the bears at a variety of prices to new users, who are less likely to know how to verify an appropriate source for the fund-raising items, let alone that there might be a difference in purchasing one from another user, than from the Second Life Marketplace.

It’s a practice not unlike the peddling of Second Life Library items around new user areas, and is currently common enough that some groups are creating signs and notices to try to warn new users not to be taken in.

Lesson: For the dedicated scammer, nothing is sacred or above exploitation for personal gain.
