Not so many years ago at a linux.conf.au conference, a presenter – from a large, and successful commercial business – made a shocking arse of himself during a presentation.

You see there was a woman in the front row of the audience, who – though her technical skills and accomplishments far eclipsed those of the presenter – was interested in the topic.

Most businesses have lousy asset-disposal policies. Employees often find it considerably cheaper simply to throw out items, rather than go through an arduous disposal policy, if there even is a policy. A lot of the time it’s equipment and electronics, because the employees have a hard time even identifying what a thing actually is, let alone how best to go about selling it on.

Not all of it is broken, either. Office refits, and standardisation on new equipment can lead to an enormous amount of otherwise functional stuff destined for the skip. Be in the right place at the right time, and you can outfit a home office or a small business with second-hand kit that businesses otherwise just throw away.

Teens evade filtering and electronic monitoring

A few weeks ago, I was walking the couple of kilometres from home to the mechanic to collect the car. On the way, I wound up walking for a short ways behind a couple of teenage high-school girls, maybe 13, if I’m any judge of these things. One was telling the other about how to trade pornography online without being tripped up by filtering software or school administrators checking network logs.
