A tough sell

The media peddles two basic perceptions about Second Life, and Linden Lab has its work cut out for it if it wants to overcome even one of them.

The two problem perceptions are: “No one is there, not much is going on” and of course the classic stench-of-shame, that there’s some sort disgraceful stigma attached with being associated with Second Life.

And of course neither one of them is really true… but neither one of them is actually false either, and that makes it a tough sell.

Social networking narcissism

The WSJ carries a piece called How Facebook Ruins Friendships. The author writes,

Like many people, I’m experiencing Facebook Fatigue. I’m tired of loved ones—you know who you are—who claim they are too busy to pick up the phone, or even write a decent email, yet spend hours on social-media sites, uploading photos of their children or parties, forwarding inane quizzes, posting quirky, sometimes nonsensical one-liners or tweeting their latest whereabouts. (“Anyone know a good restaurant in Berlin?”)

It’s attributed to narcissism, and they wish our friends would stop boring us all with this trivial stuff.

Well, wake up and smell the culture. Twitter, virtual environments, television, radio, water-cooler conversations, blogs, Facebook walls … this is who we are, honey. That’s the susurration of culture, the sounds of our societies being themselves.

Deviancy and the balance of immersion

Immersion occupies an interesting and multifaceted place in our societies and cultures. It is a quality of focus and attention. It’s what your boss wishes you had more of when it comes to your tasks and meetings. It’s what your teachers wish you had more of when it comes to lessons and homework. It’s what your spouse wishes you had more of when it comes to the dishes, cooking and the laundry. It’s what your kids wish you had more of when they’re telling you about their day.

And when we wind up immersed in anything else – particularly if it is something personally enjoyable or fulfilling – it is considered deeply suspect and somehow wrong.

Why I haven’t friended you in Facebook

Honestly, I’ve not kept up my Facebook profile. I can’t even remember when I last logged into it. I’m probably not likely to either. Basically, because my profile there could be deleted at any moment. It would be a waste of time to update it.

You see, Facebook doesn’t allow aliases, such as avatar names, stage names, pen names, and so o– Wait a minute! Yes they bloody well do!
